Addon Review: OPie

Well my Autobar finally died yesterday, I had been getting errors regularly but the addon was still running, I made the mistake of trying to do an upgrade (may have ended up being a downgrade) and the mod has poohed itself to the maximus :(

After a little look around I found nothing that really met my requirements, being;

  • Something that didn’t use my hotbars
  • Something that could be easily hidden when not needed
  • Something that was easy to use and setup

I also think that my use of Autobar was minimal (i.e. I didnt use it to it’s full potential) in the sense that I really used it for the same things generally haha, food, flasks etc. I was regularly using the same buttons and used maybe 15% of the buttons available.

Enter OPie , after looking around I found this mod and decided to give it a shot on the basis it looks bloody cool. I had seen it before but decided to pass at that time :)

Basically you create a series of ‘rings’ that you trigger through hotkeys (as setup by typing /opie), you can then ‘quickly’ (once your used to it maybe haha) trigger your rings and make a selection.

Warning: you DO NOT need to be on the selected icon to make a selection, it will auto select the highlighted option based on your mouse location to the ring (I wasted a couple of flasks haha)

The default install comes with some defaults; Trade, Quest, Raid Markers etc etc but I dont think I will use them too much (at least not for now), my primary need arises from needing to quickly (and easily) buff and flask up in raids etc. I don’t need a quest ring because in reality I dont quest that much anymore :)

The configuration is pretty easy, drag and drop any number of macros, spells, items into the ring config and your off, set a key binding (i chose ALT+Mouse Button 5). So all I did was drop on my common items; flasks, hearth, buffs, food etc.

Then in game I click ALT+MB5 and the ring appears, then mouse your curser to the appropriate action and KABAM it’s done :)

The real advantage of this addon is that it frees up even more area on my ui.

Now am I going to map all my spells to a ring and not use key bindings, hell no! It’s too much of a shift for me and I dont see that it would improve my performance, also the mouse action philosophy would really stuff my mouseover macros haha.

All in all the module is a great idea, well developed and I have deleted Autobar completely. It meets by requirements and has that wow-cool factor I like sometimes haha
